PTSD
"Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event.” Some symptoms of PTSD are, "flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.” Some people that go through traumatic events it takes them awhile to re-adjust and basically bounce back from the event that occurred in their life. However, over time, if the person has the right care and support the traumatic reactions can get better for them.
Depression
There is a lot more to depression than most people think it is. The symptoms of depression can include, “prolonged sadness, feelings of hopelessness, unexplained crying, changes in appetite with significant weight loss or gain, loss of energy or loss of interest and pleasure in activities previously enjoyed.” Depression can affect a person’s outer appearance, which can lead to the person feeling very hopeless. In addition to that, this can also impact one’s thought process and the ability to make good or bad decisions. In the very extreme cases of depression, a lot of people do have suicidal thoughts and or actions.
Dissociation
In cases of dissociation, it usually means that the person is basically not present, mentally they have checked out. With dissociation, people often find themselves daydreaming. But with severe or chronic dissociation, it may get in the way of a person’s ability to mentally function in the real world. For example, not being able to actually do work or not being able to actively participate at school.
Domestic violence can also have a large affect on one’s health. Most common physical effects of trauma from abuse are:
Physical effects can include, but aren't limited to:
- Chronic fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle tension
- Involuntary shaking
- Changes in eating and sleeping patterns
- Sexual dysfunction
- In women, issues with menstrual cycle or fertility
Physical effects can include, but aren't limited to:
- Bruises or that look like they came from choking, punching or defending oneself
- Black eyes
- Red or purple marks at the neck
- Sprained or broken wrists
